ESU 10 was host to 15 area high schools involving 90 students at the Fifth Annual Build a Computer Day on Monday, January 18, 2010. The ESU 10 technology training team along with technology majors from UNK provided assistance to students as they built their computers. Participants gained a better understanding of the working components of a computer and became familiar with Web 2.0 tools that support both education and personal use. In addition to building a computer, students installed “Ubuntu,” an open source Linux-based operating system. The open source system provides numerous applications similar to what the students use on either the PC or Mac platforms.
Thirteen of the schools attending are presently taking part in the ESU 10 sponsored Technology Education Challenges in High School (TECHS) course. This class is offered to schools for students in grades 10-12 having a strong interest in technology. The TECHS class is a year-long online course supported by video that provides participants with current technology understanding and hands on applications.
Schools that attended include: Arcadia, Brady, Burwell, Cozad, Dundy County Stratton, Elm Creek, Gibbon, Gothenburg, Kearney Catholic, Loup County, Pleasanton, Ravenna, Sargent, Shelton and Wood River. This is the first of a three site Build a Computer Day tour to be presented by the ESU 10 technical team. Similar events are scheduled at ESU 6 in Milford, and at ESU 16 in Ogallala.
