Yes, it’s that time of year. FLU SEASON. If you haven’t already – get your flu shot. The CDC suggests teachers are in one of the categories of persons they recommend receive the vaccine.
If you do find yourself with the following symptoms, you know you likely have the flu.
- Fever
- Headache
- Tiredness (can be extreme)
- Dry cough
- Sore throat
- Nasal congestion
- Body aches
The flu is spread by droplets from coughing or sneezing and then touching surfaces that have infected droplets on them. Here are some strategies to strengthen your immune system and prevent the spread of the flu:
- Get 7-8 hours of sleep each night.
- Drink extra fluids
- Eat a well-balanced diet including 5 fruits/vegetables per day
- Exercise
- Cough or sneeze into a tissue and throw it away
- Cover up with a sleeve if you don’t have a tissue
- Wash your hands often!!
- Keep hands away from face, including eyes, nose, and mouth
If you do get the flu, here are some suggestions for a return to better health:
- Stay home until you no longer have a fever
- Get extra rest
- Drink extra fluids
- Take over-the-counter products to alleviate your symptoms of sore throat or nasal congestion
- See your physician. There are some excellent anti-viral medications that, if taken within the first 48 hours, can lessen the severity and length of the flu.
