In Grand Island on June 5th - 7th, ESU 10 teachers had a unique opportunity to learn the latest literacy research and how it applies to their classrooms from two internationally-known experts Dr. Cathy Collins Block and Dr. John Mangieri.
Dr. Cathy Collins Blockhas been on the graduate faculty of Texas Christian University since 1977. She is the author of numerous books and has written more than 90 articles for professional journals. Dr. Block serves on standing committees for the American Educational Research Association, International Reading Association, and National Reading Conference.
Dr. John Mangieri is a Fulbright Scholar and the director of the Institute for Literacy Enhancement. He is the author and coauthor of many professional articles and books. He has served as the chairman of the reading department at the University of South Carolina and as dean of the School of Education at Texas Christian University.
Over the three days of training with Dr. Block and Dr. Mangieri, 65 kindergarten-third grade teachers and 45 fourth – eighth grade teachers learned the latest research-based strategies for teaching vocabulary; and a combined 81 teachers were present with an overview of the traits of exemplary literacy teachers.
Teachers’ comments included:
“Great workshop, I really learned a lot of the research on vocabulary and how to teach for the benefit of the students.”
“Wow! This is really good stuff.”
“I have some useful, easy-to-implement ideas that I can adapt to my own classroom.”

Dr. Block and Dr. Mangieri’s research and training generated a great deal of excitement in our teachers as they thought about planning and revising their teaching for next year’s students.
