2007 Summer High Ability Learning Institute

Child ID Project

Submitted by Paula Mellinger
Professional Dev. Coordinator
ESU 10

The focus of the 2007 Summer HAL Institute was Differentiated Instructional Strategies. It was held on June 11-12.

Classrooms are full of unique learners and teachers are challenged with enabling all students to attain competencies. During the workshop participants examined current cognitive research related to how humans learn and make meaning as well as the Theory of Multiple Intelligences. Instructional and assessment strategies that support how the brain learns and retains information were explored. A framework and new models were shared to provide a variety of learning and assessment strategies from which teachers can differentiate instruction and assessment to enable unique learners to reach standards.

Comments about the workshop included:
“I received several useful ideas and activities that are easy to implement. I’m looking forward to using these ideas.”
“Use of learning styles with activities was great.”
“Graphic Organizers were very helpful.”
“There was excellent modeling of methods for us and a chance to experience some activities.”
“Video clips of teachers using methods were helpful.”
